The service overlay network design problem for interactive internet applications

چکیده
Consider a private network of geographically dispersed computers with fast and high capacity connections, and an Internet application session, such as a massive multiplayer online game, with a server and a set of clients. We refer to the former as a service overlay network (SON), and assume that it could be connected to the Internet. The problem is to decide how to configure and utilize the SON in support of this application, such that the clients' speed of communication with the server is within given communication performance requirements. We provide an Integer Programming formulation of this problem, and prove that it is NP Hard. In an attempt to solve the problem within strict computational time requirements of actual applications, we develop a solution framework based on partitioning and enumerating the solution space into smaller subproblems, one or more of which contains an optimal solution. In this framework, we develop and test an optimal seeking exact, and a fast polynomial time heuristic algorithm with success. The exact algorithm sets optimally solvable sizes of the subject problem, whereas the heuristic algorithm sets the size of solvable instances in a real application. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

On Designing the Overlay Topology of ROMCA (Resilient Overlay for Mission Critical Applications)
Inadequate end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and resilience support still exists across the Internet as it is difficult to achieve cooperation between the Autonomous Systems (AS) that are operated independently by Internet Service Providers (ISP). The use of an Overlay Network (ON) deployed on top of the Internet is viewed as one of the effective strategies to provide some measure of service ...
متن کاملAn Algorithmic Approach to Topological Design of Service Overlay Networks
The Internet still lacks adequate support for QoS applications with real-time requirements. In great part, this is due to the fact that provisioning of end-to-end QoS to traffic that traverses multiple autonomous systems (ASs) requires a level of cooperation between ASs that is difficult to achieve in the current architecture. Recently, service overlay networks have been considered as an approa...

Adequately supporting applications with Quality-of-service (QoS) requirements is a challenging task, particularly in the Internet. In great part, this is due to the fact that the provisioning of end-toend QoS to traffic that traverses multiple autonomous systems (ASes) requires a level of cooperation between ASes that is difficult to achieve in the current architecture. Recently, service overla...
متن کاملTowards a Service Oriented Internet
Today’s Internet remains faithful to its original design that dates back more than two decades. In spite of tremendous diversity in users, as well as the sheer variety of applications that it supports, it still provides a single, basic, service offering—unicast packet delivery. While this legacy architecture seemed adequate till recently, it cannot support the requirements of newer services and...

The importance of the component service model has been widely recognized in the Internet community due to its high flexibility in creating customized applications from primitive services in a plug-and-play manner. Deployment of such a service model in the wide area networks spawns a new type of routing problem QoS service-added routing, that is far more complex than the traditional QoS routing ...
